Time for another glorious day at Dawnright college.

Do I like college?

I mean it’s alright.

Like, I’m with Helena, I’m doing a course I enjoy - we’re both doing Early Childhood Studies - you know we’re both all for giving back to the next generation and everything, I suppose that’s one of the reasons why we’re both such good friends if you know what I mean?

Let alone having spent most of our lives in care.

“Morning class,” Our teacher, Mrs White began, as all twelve of us took our seats within the classroom. We were a small class, the childhood studies, a small but tight knit class (aside from two people but you’ll meet them in a second). “Hope you all had a good weekend. Now today, we’ll be revising the key points we’ve gone over since Spring in preparation for an assessment-”

“Wait, an assessment?” Lily Preston shrieked, whilst excessively chewing gum. God, I fucking hate her. She’s such a conventional sixteen year old. Waist length bleach blonde hair, heavy mascara, orange foundation, who basically knows fuck all about anything - at times like this it does surprise me how the fuck she managed to get into college. “Miss, we just had to hand in a 1200 essay last week and you expect me to waste more of my leisure time revising?” She shook her head. “Why don’t you just assess Maisie and Helena?” She turned to look at us. “Assess whether they need psychiatric help or not.”

See what I mean?

The amount of times I’ve resisted the urge to slap her.

Fuck me.

“Miss Preston I appreciate that times are stressful for you right now but that comment was uncalled for,” She said, adjusting her glasses. “Maisie and Helena are simply here for the same reason that you are. To learn, get this qualification and move on with your lives-”

“Life?” She scoffed. “What life do they have? Living in care? With no family, I mean, it’s time like these,” She turned to look at her best friend, Ellen. “I’m glad that I’m normal, don’t you agree, El?”

“Couldn’t agree more,” Ellen said, as she sneered at us both sitting in the corner. “Anyway, please carry on, Miss.”

“As I was saying,” Mrs White rolled her eyes. “This week we’ll be revising the key points-”

“I swear to god if Lily says one more word about us,” Helena hissed angrily. “I don’t know who she thinks she is sometimes, the town’s resident slag, thinking she can talk down to us.”

“I know, but she’s right,” I said, sighing. “We’re always gonna be different from other people.”

Because we’re always gonna be those kids in care.

Like all through secondary school we weren’t, sorry. Come on Maisie, take a deep breath and compose yourself. Right, as I was saying, all through secondary school, god I suppose that this isn’t really gonna come as a surprise to you, after hearing our encounter with Lily, ok, all through secondary school me and Helena both suffered with atrociously bad bullying. Well I say both of us, Helena was more of the target - you see unlike me whose parents both supposedly died in a car crash when I was six months old, Helena’s parents instead gave her up when she was just two weeks old.

Yep.

Two weeks old.

Two weeks old and they decided that they no longer wanted her.

The amount of times that people have made fun out of her, especially because of it.

It’s been nothing short of heartbreaking for me as her friend to watch unfold before my eyes.

But this is how our life was.

And this is how it would always be.
