Wooow. Okay. What a long, agonizing situation to be in. I love how you set up his expectations (it being over quickly) and the reality of what happened being so, so, soooooo much longer, accidentally putting his mother through more too. There's been a lot of chapters leading up to this, building onto the ones that came before. You did it really well and "the moment" came right in time. He thinks about all he'd say to his dad but ends up with a situation where he can't, and by the time he thinks of anything...bam, his dad is gone.

Honestly The Father did not think this through at all. Like yeah let me marry my son to one of the more prestigious houses in the kingdom, and allow him to live alone, this won't turn against me at all and he will still be in my direct control.

Chaaaaarles... You miss your mother and Catherine misses her family. And life. Oh gosh I just realized he's accidentally created a situation similar to his dad and his mom. A wife who can't connect with her husband because he won't let her, and there's no real communication in the house. So sad =[

I think another sad part is that he does think his current situation with Catherine is the best way forward, as he thinks that allowing Catherine to be on her own, allowed free reign to do what she wants, and he does the same, is 1000x better than his parents relationship bc he's not controlling her life or abusing her. Unfortunately, bc of his lack of communication with her, he has no idea if that's what she wants.
