“Come on Maisie,” My best friend Helena shouted from the bottom of the stairs. She was a tall girl with slender legs, coming in roughly around the same height as me 5ft 5 with a platinum blonde french plait she wore to the side, tawny skin, ocean blue eyes and freckles (to be honest you would’ve thought she was a model) and wore a black checked shirt, ripped jeans and trainers. “If we don’t get going within thirty minutes, we’ll end up missing the bus for college.”

Maybe we weren’t meant to catch the bus today, haha, I’m only joking.

“Alright, keep your hair on,” I said, as I dashed out of the bathroom and headed downstairs to join her. “It's not my fault if we have a queue in the morning is it?!”

One of the endless perks of living within a care home.

“Suppose,” She said, as we walked arm in arm down the corridor into the kitchen. “Anyway, how did you sleep?”

“Not great,” I said, rolling my eyes. “Kept having these weird dreams, one of them about I was this sorcerer trying to take down this evil black magic witch, and stop her killing this young-”

“Has someone been reading too many fantasy novels?” She joked.

She had a point to be fair.

I was a big sucker for fantasy.

Always had a weird obsession with all that type of thing.

But then again when you’re a teenager these days, any means of escaping the shithole which society has become, was a bonus, right?

Right?

“Probably,” I chuckled. “Anyway, as much as I would love to live in a fantasy world, we’ve got college in just under an hour and-”

“If it isn’t for my favourite ladies!” Pamela, one of our senior carers exclaimed as we walked into the kitchen. She was a middle aged woman, with cropped chocolate brown hair, bronze skin, and emerald green eyes. She was quite short and plump, but honestly, she was one of the loveliest people you can ever meet and had been a great “mum” to me and Helena throughout our lives.

“What can I get you for breakfast? Cereal? Toast? Fruit? Porridge?”

“Blimey Pam, what are we in a hotel?!” Jon, our other senior carer exclaimed as he made his same breakfast as he does every other day - fucking dry ass muesli, with bananas, like I’m sorry I ain’t got anything against muesli nor bananas for that matter, but together, with black coffee? Like, what are you a psychopath? Anyway that aside, he, like Pam, was middle aged, well at least I thought he was, I could be wrong, he might be younger or older but it’s pretty damn impossible to age bald men sometimes (it’s not just me is it?). “Can’t they just have what they’re given?”

“Alright, someone’s got out on the wrong side of the bed today, haven’t they?” Helena said, rolling her eyes. “Sure we got enough sleep last night Jonathan?”

“Of course I did, you know me Pam. I'm as regular as clockwork when it comes to my sleeping schedule.”
