Time: Present Day

Location: Paris, France

"Before we go, there is one thing that I don't fully understand," Carter said to Teacher.

"Only one?" Teacher scoffed.

"Well a major one anyway," Carter said. "Here I can talk to people, and they sort of hear me. I can influence things, get people to do things, things that they wouldn't normally do!" Carter looked for confirmation.

"Yes, that is true, you are starting to realise your power, the power of the All within you," Teacher said with a hint of pride.

"But, in the tunnel, I wanted to stop Anton. I wanted to save my grandmother, but I couldn't even get close to them, let alone influence what was going on. I felt powerless, useless! Why? Why couldn't I stop Anton? Why couldn't I save her from the fire?"

"These are good questions Carter Cheval, you learn by asking such questions. The simple truth is, you cannot change what has already happened, the past in your words," Teacher tried to explain.

"But, I was there as I am here. He gestured to all his family discussing how he came into the world," Carter argued.

"No, no. When you were sitting next to your Nanna in the back of the taxi, you weren't really, that's why you came out when it was hit from behind. The accident had already happened. Your Nanna, Monique was already dead. You went back in time in order for you to see what happened, for you to learn. They were not really there, Anton, your Nanna, the taxi driver . . . "

"You mean it was an illusion?" Carter said.

"No, not an illusion, the past, you were seeing their energy from the past, the light they reflected from the past. They were no longer there. Remember, at school when you were told that some of the stars you see in the sky were ghosts. They were so far away that the light from them takes billions of years to reach your Earth. That by the time light reached you some of them no longer existed. They had already turned into black holes or exploded. Yet, you could still see the light from them. You were effectively glimpsing the past. In fact many many pasts, simultaneously. You were in a sense time travelling while standing still, that is if you call standing on a spinning planet orbiting an extremely fast star in a galaxy moving at lightning speed standing still, so vast is the All."

"So, I was seeing the light reflected by them from the past, they were no longer there? Like a movie?"

"Indeed Carter Cheval, like a movie."

For Carter the penny started to drop. He really hadn't been watching movies of his life at . . , he'd been time travelling!

"Why couldn't I go close then, get a close up view? I was being held back by some force!" Carter asked.

"The All allows you to do as you please so long as it doesn't harm you, and helps in your advancement. You would have been hurt to see your Nanna, to an extent you already were, but to see her perish in that fire close up and not been able to help her. That would have hurt you too much, so you were prevented from going there, just as you were unable to intervene in something that had already occurred. Soon you will learn to know the difference between the now, and the past, between what is possible to change, and what is not possible to change. The All progresses rapidly and ceaselessly, always has, always will. Now you are capable of making huge progress Carter Cheval. Do not waste this knowledge on self indulgence. For now, let's leave your Aunt Margot to tell your story, for us, all roads lead to Rome."
